Need a quick recap of the past week in movie news? Here are the highlights:

James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: Disney and Marvel Studios reinstated James Gunn as the director of the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie after the studio had fired him last summer over inappropriate past social media content. Gunn, who wrote and directed the first two Guardians installments, had already scripted Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the sequel is still delayed until after Gunn finishes making the DC movie Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros.

Destin Daniel Cretton to direct Shang-Chi: Marvel also revealed the director they’ve chosen for the Shang-Chi movie. Asian-American filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for Short Term 12, will helm the comic book adaptation about the titular superhero, who is a master of kung-fu. Read everything we know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe installment here.

Tom Holland sticks with the Russo Brothers: After finishing their climactic MCU sequel Avengers: Endgame, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are leaving superheroes behind but retaining a superhero movie star. Tom Holland will re-team with the Russo Brothers for their adaptation of the nonfiction book Cherry, for which the young Spider-Man actor will portray an Iraq War vet with PTSD turned addict and bank robber.

Victory remake in the works: Speaking of war heroes, Warner Bros. is reportedly remaking the sports classic Victory (a.k.a. Escape to Victory), which is about Allied POWs playing soccer against the Nazi team. The new version will be directed by Spanish filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, best known for helming the Liam Neeson action thrillers Non-Stop and Unknown and the shark thriller The Shallows.

Gemini Man to be shown in the HFR format: Despite an unsuccessful similar effort with his previous movie, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, director Ang Lee is preparing for his upcoming sci-fi release Gemini Man, which stars Will Smith in two roles, to be shown in the still-experimental high-frame rate (HFR) format as well as in 3D. You can see how that looks when the movie opens in October.

Captain Marvel returns in Avengers: Endgame: We’ve expected Captain Marvel to be a major part of Avengers: Endgame, but the latest trailer offers the first guarantee that Brie Larson is reprising her role in the upcoming sequel, and Thor is totally into it. See their meeting and more in the new trailer below and find out everything we know about the MCU installment here.

Aladdin reveals a whole new world for the classic story: Disney dropped the first full trailer for their live-action reimagining of Aladdin, based on their 1992 animated feature, and, uh, you’ve never had a movie quite like this — save for the faithful re-creations of iconic scenes from the original, that is.
