BBC Music Awards: Adele, Coldplay Win Top Honors
Adele took home album of the year for ’25’ and song of the year for “Hello.”
Adele came out a big winner on Monday at the BBC Music Awards. The British diva won both the fan-voted album of the year award for 25 and the song of the year honor for “Hello,” while Coldplay and The 1975 also fared well.
“Thank you for this award. I feel a bit bad winning it when the album’s been out for so long,” the singer said in a statement read by Robbie Williams. (25 was released Nov. 20, 2015.)
“Hello again, I’m so sorry I’m not there,” Adele said later in another statement. “I’ll be home soon and I can’t wait. It’s been a long year on the road and this makes me feel a little less homesick — I can’t wait for Wembley and then to get back to normal.”
Adele will wrap her world tour supporting 25 with four nights at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Elsewhere, Coldplay earned the coveted British Artist of the Year honor, but the band also was not present to accept the award.
“We just got told about winning this beautiful BBC Artist of the Year award. Sorry we’re not there, we are about to go onstage in Australia,” they said in a video message. “Look at all those people and we love you and we are so grateful and we’ll see you so soon. Thank you so much and goodbye.”
British singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu also received BBC’s Introducing Artist of the Year award, which was previously awarded to Jack Garratt in 2015 and Catfish and the Bottlemen in 2014.
The BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance of the Year was given to The 1975 for their hauntingly orchestrated cover of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
“I want to thank Radio 1 for everything basically,” lead singer Matty Healy said onstage. “They’ve been intrinsic in our success with the Live Lounge.”
